4 Practices to Reduce Freight and Cargo Transport Risk

Whether you choose air freight, sea freight, ground cargo or a mixture of various options, it is essential that you understand the risks associated with it. Weather can be a major hurdle, especially unexpected natural disasters or extreme weather conditions that make slow down transport all over the world. Another problem that one might face during import/export of goods or transport of project equipment is accidents. Here we will discuss 4 ways for you to mitigate transport risk:

1. Insurance Policy

Having a good corporate insurance policy is essential to any business. The freight company you choose should give you an insurance policy that you need to go through thoroughly with your legal team so that nothing is left out. You should know who holds the liability for your goods at every stop and exchange of goods during the transport process. The buyer or seller of the goods should also be aware of damages and the policy of whether the product is insured or not.

2. Hire better drivers, truck operators etc

As the name suggests, accidents are unintentional and may result in damages. However, statistics show that accidents can be avoided when you hire good drivers, pilots, captains or whoever is driving your choice of transport. Good drivers with a minimum number of accidents and good profile are your best bet because they are the professional ones who take care while operating a vehicle. A good driver is one who has been in the business for a while, has good knowledge of the laws, is aware that the goods he is transporting have a high value. A responsible operator will be your most trusted person as he is the one who has to ensure that goods reach at a specific time considering any unavoidable delays like traffic, customs clearance and so on.

3. Choose a reputable freight transport company

Above all the most important thing to consider is the freight agency you choose, because these companies take up full responsibility from pick up to drop off. A good freight organization is one that has warehouses for storage of different type of goods, like having temperature control storage as well as having large size storage space for overnight storage. Not just that, but they should offer multiple options like transporting goods through sea, air and ground. They should be able to provide you with proper insurance and a damage free policy. Make sure that the company has trustworthy transport management system and tracking software in place. Read testimonials of other companies or businesses that have used them before you confirm your order.

4. Consider Risk Profile

Be realistic about the risks and dangers involved in transporting goods, heavy equipment or construction projects from one place to another. Make an assessment with the transport management company about how the project will be transferred and what risks are involved. Work on how you can reduce any avoidable damages and extra fees you may have to pay at borders. After all your assets are involved, it is best for you to have it all insured and also understand what will happen if there are any damages. Besides that, there must be a plan B in case there are issues with transport.

In conclusion, there are several ways to diminish any risks or damages that one may face during transport. However, the most important lesson to learn is that one needs to choose a transport management system or freight agency that promises the least amount of damages, has a great insurance policy in place and is reputed to deliver on time. An agency that understands the risks involved and has at least 10 years or more of experience in transporting goods is the best place to put your trust in. They normally have great relationships with other transport systems in case a third party is needed as well as having friendly relations with border controls and customs clearance.
